About Me

Charlie Barmonde
My recent work is informed by the writers ethic of “write what you know”. Though writing is not my chosen mode of self expression, one thing I know about is boats, sailboats specifically. Their shapes and nuances, the subtle way their composite parts are joined, the way loads are spread along their hulls and deck fittings, how they move gracefully, powerfully through the water using air as fuel. My fascination with sailing has crossed over into my vocation as a ceramist. I have tried to create a sense of movement through directional glazing and shapes borrowed not from Brancusi, but rather from Melvin, Morrelli, Irens, Wormwood and countless other unnamed yacht designers whose hulls have captured my eye since I was a boy.
